Case Studies
An investor in his peak accumulation stage is concerned about preserving his wealth, without compromising on the optimal returns. Some of his goals have been fulfilled and he has more clarity and experience with respect to the investments and capital markets. Retirement and bequest make the priorities of goals. Sometimes, a new goal of funding a startup may also shape up. Investments are balanced, with a decent allocation in alternative assets and specialised equity products. The most important risk metric for this investor may be the value at risk.
An investor in retirement may either look at meeting his liquidity needs from the portfolio or grow it steadily with a bequest goal. Depending on life expectancy, lifestyle requirements, contingency expenses or other unique scenarios, allocations into fixed income could be decided. Pertinent would be to manage the shortfall risk without compromising on the liquidity. There is a likelihood of having higher allocations towards dividend yielding equities, covered high yield bonds and high-quality fixed income including coupon paying bonds. To make the portfolio tax efficient, one may also advocate use of systematic withdrawals instead of going for dividend and interest income.
A family may have multiple members with clearly defined corpus, and different risk profiles. A customised approach for each would need to be created based on the risk profiles without taking the control away from the family head/ appointed decision maker. Tax optimisation may be the key amongst family members if the wealth is managed under a single risk profile as choice of allocation in each portfolio would then depend on individual tax liabilities.
A small corporation may wish to optimise its cash holdings and make use of the float/ unutilised cash. The decision maker could make buckets of planned liquidity needs over the next 1 – 3 years to construct the appropriate mix that comprises accrual as well as interest rate strategies, with short to medium term durations. Alternatively, a liability driven portfolio may be constructed to match the anticipated cash flow requirements.

Investment is a long-term game. Just like one doesn’t keep checking the price of a real estate frequently after buying it, one shouldn’t check the market values too frequently or get perturbed with the changes in portfolio value in the short term. In essence, change is required only when the purpose of a fund, or an allocation is fulfilled, and it is prudent to make the changes. We do not believe in frequent changes and let the power of compounding grow the wealth of the investors over the longer term.

An investor in his initial accumulation phase is more concerned about potentially maximising his returns by controlling the risks. Portfolio is growth oriented with higher allocation towards equities, diversified across geographies, market caps, styles and themes. Goals may include kids education, real estate, and retirement planning. Immediate liquidity needs are less. Depending on the wealth size, one may also hold alternative assets to improve upon the returns at the cost of illiquidity. One may do a scenario analysis to gauge the investor’s willingness and capability to take the risks.
